The next few days went quickly, and soon everyone but Kate was gone. Noah made it a point to get up in time to meet Emma in the garden before joining her sunrise walks with the “sisters” or peeling off to get in some early surfing. Kate slept in a little later and spent her mornings working on the border gardens around the grassy area beyond the deck. Emma kept trying to get her to come along on the early walks, but so far Kate had resisted. Noah thought she was afraid she wouldn’t fit in with the other, more flamboyant women, or maybe she was afraid to get too attached to the place.

He’d already lost that battle.

Ava and Penelope teased him mercilessly. The Surf Dads did, too, telling him he was burning through his probation period fast and he’d have to produce a child quickly or be thrown out of the club. “Then where will you go for cold beer and the best barbecue in town?” Greg had asked. Noah hadn’t told him he could find both at Emma’s place.

He’d connected with Will Jans and the Wilkens brothers—important names in the local surf scene who’d agreed to let him photograph them the next time the waves got big. He’d made a number of other acquaintances in the group, men he figured would soon be friends.

He spent his time with one eye on the forecast, the other on Emma, watching for any opportunity to surf or get close to her. Unfortunately, he wasn’t the only one. Every day someone showed up on the Trouble Bench. Luckily, Emma had lots of baked goods to spare.

She was spending all her free time in the kitchen, making test batches of the recipes she’d created over the years for her food delivery business, making changes and substitutions and jotting down new ideas as they came to her. He’d been watching videos about food photography, and whenever she brought a batch of treats out of the oven, he purloined some to practice with. It was hard to keep from eating her food long enough to photograph it, but he was getting better and had taken a few shots he was proud of.

“We’ll have to split the proceeds from the cookbook,” she said.

“No way,” he told her bluntly. “Give me the photography credit on the book, but I don’t want your money.”

“It’s only fair.”

“If you have to sell this place, my new neighbor might be a real ass,” he pointed out. “I want you next door. Nobody else.”

She blushed, and he took advantage of the situation to steal a kiss.

He seemed to be kissing Emma all the time these days, but things hadn’t progressed any further, and he wasn’t sure why he was hesitating.

Maybe because he was afraid to ruin the understanding they’d come to. Emma was letting him kiss her now, but soon enough Andrew would return with new plans, and their arguments would start up again. He wanted this comfortable interlude to last as long as possible.
